Our History
Christ Lutheran Church is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We have been a part of Lake County since 1978 when a group of individuals first started worshiping in the local school gymnasium. By 1979 we were able to open the doors of our current church building. Over the years we have developed a ministry presence that honors a partnership with individuals and families of diverse backgrounds.
Our Welcome
Christ Lutheran Church & PreSchool is a community committed to the work of equity and inclusion, bringing justice and support for all of God’s beloveds. We welcome those who are seeking God’s love and grace for the first time or as a life-long believer. We welcome because Jesus shows us how to welcome, regardless of race, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, economic resources, relationship status, health challenges or anything else that too often divides us. It is in our welcome which we commit ourselves to being an anti-racist space, a space where we seek daily to deepen our work of inclusion in the life of our church. Our unity is in Christ. All are welcome here. (Christ Lutheran Church & PreSchool is a Reconciling In Christ Community)
Our Members
We are an energetic, accepting, diverse, multi-generational congregation. Our mission is to offer a supportive and sincere home for everyone so that each of our faith journeys may be a blessing. We work to create a church home where you can learn about God’s love and where we jointly discern and grow in our relationship with God. You do not need to be a member of this church or a Lutheran to take part in the sacraments. You are welcome to follow the call of Christ to your heart.
Our Style
All are welcome at Christ Lutheran. Visitors are frequent. Children are cherished. When it comes to our worship services, our church “style” mixes familiar, traditional and more contemporary elements, including music and spoken word. Some have said we are rather informal – and we like to say that “church clothes” are whatever we have on. We continue to adjust to make worship as safe and engaging as possible, particularly in light of COVID-19.
Our Belief
We are a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and as Lutherans we believe that the love of God at work in the crucified Christ creates a right relationship. Through God’s grace and the gift of Jesus, we live.
Our Ministries
We celebrate God’s love for all creation and we nurture our relationship with our community through acts of compassion and outreach. As part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), we support hundreds of social ministry and humanitarian efforts throughout the area and across the globe.
One of our larger ministry efforts is Christ Lutheran PreSchool, a diverse, compassionate early learning community that counts hundreds of children and families as friends and supporters. Christ Lutheran PreSchool serves families from a variety of faith backgrounds as we create a safe environment for children to grow in social-emotional and pre-academic skills. For decades, the program has provided a program that focuses on compassion, acceptance, understanding and celebration of each individual.
In addition, we partner with other local churches and faith communities, both ELCA and non-ELCA.
Our Outreach
Our local outreach efforts include support of COOL Ministries, Love INC, Midwest Veteran’s Closet, Sarah’s Circle, Sue’s Pantry, Feed My Starving Children, Empty Bowls grassroots hunger initiatives, children’s advocacy programs through the Lake County Courthouse, the Project Linus (through our Caring Hands Group), Project Warmth ministry to the Chicago streets, winter clothing drives for our local schools, sponsorships and donations to Township food pantries, and more. We also partner with a variety of community groups, including Scouts, AA, AlAnon and others.
